Most news is not good these days. Just pick up a newspaper or turn on the radio or the TV. You don’t have to read, listen to, or watch the news for long before you find yourself being bombarded with accounts of war, terrorism, crime, famine, economic chaos and political or even royal scandals.

If someone had news that was consistently good you would think that people would flock to hear it. The gospel is good news: that is what the word ‘gospel’ means. It is the good news that Jesus commanded his disciples to proclaim all over the world. It is the good news that has been proclaimed from pulpits and platforms across tables and over fences for two thousand years. Today it is being beamed around the world by radio and television, and reaching more geographical territory than ever before.

But is the gospel welcomed as good news? The fact remains that most people do not look upon the gospel as good news at all. The vast majority of the human race has no interest in the gospel.

What exactly is the gospel? The gospel is about a plan of salvation- a plan that only God could conceive and carry out. It is a plan that was formulated to save those who could not save themselves- sinners.

In other words, God saves sinners, ‘thirsting souls’ in need of ‘the saving work of God in the heart of man’.
